Is it true that it is actually dangerous to use a cell phone while pumping gas?

No, it's a myth. Cell phones have never been proven to spark a fire at a gas station or to cause explosions. All reports of this have been anecdotal and never been proved. Even a recent report that a gasoline station fire was caused by a cell phone was retracted, stating that the fire was caused by static electricity from improper fueling by the customer. Cell phones don't cause static. Cell phone batteries do not cause sparks. It's just not true.

No. The fact of the matter is it was tested and the result was not the cell phone that caused the fire but, believe it or not, it was the person on the phone. By getting in and out of the car and having cloth seats, the static electricity built up and caused a spark to ignite the fumes from the gas pump. It's the same principle as dragging your feet across the carpet and touching a door knob. We've all done that as kids haven't we?

Yes. Also: When you get in your car and leave the pump running, then get back out to stop the pump, you build up a static charge which can ignite the gas when you reach for the nozzle to stop the pump.
Most gas station fires involve women because you talk on the phone, but also because you are more likely to sit in your car while you talk.

the static eletricity can cause a spark and egnite fumes in the air,but i CAN´T EVER HAPPENS by using ur selfphone. It happens because u might touch ur woollen clothes etc.The best way to void this is, when u get out of the car u should touch the top of the can where is metal in order all the electricity u have inside u will leave ur body.I´definetally in this because i´ve read severall experiments about it.Noone ever made to create an explotion no matter what he did, by using a selfphone.I hope i helped u in that.

Yes, but we cannot always be safe all the time. So, why not smoke a cigarette, talk on the cell phone, and pick our noses whilst pumping gas.

Or, maybe, we should just deal with the issue at hand, pumping gas.

no you need a spark to start a fire if you rub against carpet and tuch the filler tub you could start a fire just because it is electric does not mean it will cause a spark or start a fire most new cars have an electric fuel pump in the gas tank

No. Mythbusters did a show on it they could not get nothing to happen. You can however set of gas with static electricity. Usually caused by people getting back in the car then climbing back out. Happens more to women than men.

The concern is that if you drop the cell phone and the battery falls off and shorts, the spark will ignite fuel vapors and/or fuel spilled on the ground.

Better chances at winning the lottery.
