I've never had a dog before, so I don't know. I've got a 4 1/2 month old Golden Retriever who had the sniffles yesterday and whose nose has been running (clear) for about a day. He played hard this morning but seems like he's acting very, very tired now, much more than usual. The drainage from his nose is more now, is thicker, and is a pale yellow color. Should I be concerned or does he just have a little bit of a cold? Thanks!

He's fully vaccinated, by the way, Parvo, Distemper, Rabies, Kennel Cough, the works. No more shots scheduled for another year.

All dogs have a runny nose to a point but I would say that your dog has caught a cold or has allergies. I would take him to the vet and get him some antibiotics before the cold gets worse. Especially if he isn't as active as usual. They can get to feeling as bad as we do and need medications to help them get well. My dog has allergies and his eyes run all of the time and he sneezes all of the time. It is sort of funny when he keeps on sneezing and he looks at me like What is going on Mom? But take your dog to the vet and get him some medications to help him feel better before the cold turns into something worse. Good luck. By the way, even though your dog has all of his vaccinations, he can still get parvo, distemper, etc. He would just have a greater chance of survival having all of the vaccinations than if he hadn't. I had a dog to get parvo and I always keep my animals well kept up on their vaccinations. The dog lived but was in the vet hospital several days on IV's and stuff. I always feel better if I take my animals to the vet no matter what if they get sick. They are like my real children since I have no kids. Good luck and don't worry.

Golden Retriever Runny Nose

I've not had a dog with a runny nose beyond a clear discharge, but the yellow coloration can mean a type of infection... at least it does in people as it shows a higher white blood cell count to battle an infection.

I'd say to call and ask your vet. A phone explanation to your vet should be able to tell your vet if the puppy needs treatment or just some time to recover from a mild illness.

Edit: Unfortunately, in small puppies, a parvo vaccination does not completely prevent them from catching this disease. I had a puppy, fully up to date on shots, at 7 months old that contracted Parvo. Fortunately we got her in quick and caught it early and the vets were able to save her. So vaccines do help a puppy build up resistence, but it can take time and they can still get sick.

It does not matter what shots your dog has had. It's good you are an owner that cares and takes care of such things, but the problem could be related to something totally unrelated to shots.

Any dog that has sniffles that go into a thick, yellow mucus needs to see a Vet as soon as possible. There is something very wrong with that kind of discharge. Yes, it is more than a cold.

It's an upper resperatory infection. My cat gets that ALL the time due to his allergies, sneezing, behaving tired all the time, green/yellow discharge, warm temperature. My vet gives him his monthly allergy meds for it, but when he gives him a shot or cortisone, he's healthier for a lot longer. Definately speak to your vet, but it's definately common, but not to beoverlooked, it could develop quickly into pneumonia, especially with a puppy.

Could be a number of things, unfortunately, there is such thing as vaccine failure. this means your pet could still contract distemper , kennel cough, just not as bad as if not vaccinated at all. You really need to see a vet. pneumonia, starts with the symptoms you have described. Is he eating and drinking still, if so, then you have caught it early. if lethargic and not eating, go now, to emergency..please do not wait until morning.

check with the vet soonest, it sounds more then just allergies, they usually effect the eyes by causing drainage, do you have ticks? one of my dogs started like that then started sneezing, then bloody nose. and had tick fever, which can be deadly, have him checked.

I would definitely call your vet. It could also be allergies. Try giving a Benadryl and see if that helps. If the drainage is still tick and yellow it could also be sinuses but could also indicate something with the lungs. Do not wait too long to call the vet.

It's more than likely just a cold, just get him some type of liquid children's cold medicine and give him the the childs dosage...some times the vaccine for kennel cough can cause the dog to actually have a cold.

Is your pup current on his vaccinations? If not, it could be something much more serious. Please see your vet.
