As a private gemologist/jeweler I would say it varies depending on your economic background/and or taste. When money is a consideration I always advise my clients to get a smaller stone that is ideally cut with a high color grading. One of my closest friends called me from across the country and asked me if I could get her a 2ct stone for $10,000. I told her it wouldn't be a really well cut stone or have the beauty that I would like to see her wear. Well, against my advice she bought something she thought was 'great'. It wasn't until she was getting divorced and tried to resell the ring that she realized how awful the stone was.
I would much rather see you/your girlfriend get a .50 ct diamond w/ a GIA/ or AGS cert w/ at least a VG/VG grade and maybe a SI1F color then a 2ct J color w/ a G/G grade from one of those other shady 'labs'. You can always get a bigger stone in a couple of years. Remember quality is always better than quantity (size).
Email me if you have any ques.

Don't look at what everyone else is wearing.
Focus on the woman you are in love with.
1) Look at her style -- would she WANT a large stone? If she's not into glam, focus on something smaller.
2) Look at her size --a woman who is 5'2, 100 pounds with tiny hands will have a smaller karat (1/4, for example) look huge and perfect.
3) Look at your budget -- can you afford a 1 karat ring? If you can't, that's fine. My ring is 1/4 Karat, cost $100 (Ebay), and is perfect for me. I couldn't imagine a better engagement ring. Don't fool yourself into going into debt. You don't have to show your love through money.

I'm sure it varies from person to person. The jewelry companies set up a rule of 2 months salary when buying an engagement ring, but it's really whatever you and your fiance like and can afford.

We men are very concerned about size, aren't we? The only thing we brag about being small is our cell phones! Seriously, color is very important. Get the largest colorless diamond your can afford. I'm going to brag here a little - I bought my wife a completely colorless (D) diamond engagement ring and it is phenomenal! We both get lots of compliments.

I wanted one single diamond so i got the choice of a bigger better quality stone and i love it.
Also too if your wedding band is full of diamonds it takes the look away from your engagment ring I think

Depends on how much money their future husband make. Stop focusing on the size of the ring and focus on the love he has for you instead.

the size doesnt matter. If your looking for a ring the ring will find you. the ring to choose is the one that absolutely catches your eye. the descicion should be so easy you wont even have to decide.

go for around 1 karat, but dont sacrifice quality for quantity!
(It also depends on the size of the woman's hands...small diamonds look bigger on smaller hands and tiny on bigger hands)

I would rather get a small rock that's good quality rather than a huge rock and it's bad quality...quality over quantity.
