The true name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We get the name "The Mormons" because of the Book of Mormon witch is a record of the early people leving in the Western Hemispher before and after the time of christ, the whole record was abridged by a man named Mormon and hidden away so that many years later they could be found and translated for use in our day and age. If you have any questions at all you can contact the LDS Missionaries in your area and they will be more than willing to come to your home and talk over almost anything. or you can find more information at
http://www.lds.org
though that site is focused mainly toward LDS Members you can also find the information on haveing the missionaries come and visit you there.
You can also get info at
http://www.mormon.com
Good Luck with your searching.

Yes, I am LDS, or Latter-day Saint, or Mormon. The full name is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You can learn more at www.lds.org about us. Mormon is the name of one of the prophets who did the compiling of the books in the Book of Mormon, which we use in addition to the Bible as the word of God. We believe that God is our Heavenly Father, that Jesus Christ is His Son, and we also believe in the Holy Ghost. You can find us all throughout the world.
By the way, I have no idea what the answerer who told a story about pirates was thinking. I once wrote a play about French pirates in the Caribbean, and there were some Mormon jokes, but none of the characters were Mormon. I am almost 100% sure that answerer did not see my play, so apparently he is just writing fiction.

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are often called Mormons because of the Book of Mormon, which is another testament of Jesus Christ that we believe in.
If you would like to know more, contact me, contact the LDS missionaries, go to LDS.org...

Mormons believe in such things like this:
The reason why we need religion is because we do not realize that humans on themselves can't maintain. That's why God the father exists, we do not fully realize that God's commandments are a sacred laws of virtue; we don't see virtue being sacred. If we in this world applied all the negative things to our lives we as humans will not exist, but if we keep applying everything that is of virtue we will realize we are not only destroying our bodies but also our spirits within, which I believe it's our true and natural selves. We have to realize that we are not only part of the universe but participants of it. We have to magnify the spiritual power within us, but only through righteousness can such power be magnified. All things that are of matter of this world come from pure energy, we are energy, our spirits are energy, we are One in God and God within us. God is Omni potent, Omni scient, and Omni present (in spirit), that is why God is an emotional God. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saint believes that God was once man, but before he became God he found and mastered the spirit within himself. The forefathers of America build this nation under the sacred laws of virtue.
Proverbs: Chapter 8 verse 22-33:
22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor athe highest part of the dust of the world.
27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

the mormons can trace their lineage all the way back to the late 1700's when they were pirates along the eastern seaboard. and
mormons still get a bad rap because of their early history as pirates along the east coast. the mormon pirates were ruthless in those days and would waylay any ship they could find, steal the cargo, make the men walk the plank and take the women as 2nd and 3'rd and sometimes even 4th wives.
the continental congress put a stop to that and authorized several warships to capture and rid the world of the evil mormon pirates. after a long chase the mormon pirates were finally defeated and captured.
they were then exiled to utah---that being as far away from the sea as possible back then. they were left alone out there to marry many wives and do whatever it is they do---except for pirating.
