The power of God is applied to a human being externally, much like a coating of oil, so oil is a metaphor for grace.

Jesus was true God and true man, but to be fair, he conducted his earthly affairs the same way any other man would, except for sin.

The way Jesus, accomplished his mission and worked his miracles was through the power of the Holy Spirit, just like all the prophets before him, and the apostles after.

Only after his baptism in the Jordan, and after the Holy Spirit descended on him there, did he begin his mission in earnest, healing, casting out demons, and doing other miracles.

The best definition of Christ is "anointed one".

"Chrism" is the word used to denote an oily substance.

Christ comes from the Hebrew word messiah, which mean savoir or annointed one. In bible times people use to annoint people by pouring precious oils and their head. I think that is where that defination comes from.

Anointing with oil is a picture of the Holy Spirit upon an individual. In the Old Testament, Kings and Priests were anointed with oil to show selection by, and separation for, God.

The Hebrew term for "anointed one," is Meshiach, where we get the term Messiah.

The Greek term for "anointed one," is Christos, where we get the term Christ.

The original meaning behind "Christos" was exactly what you meant in your question. An athlete participating in the various games (Isthmian, for example) would get "oiled up" prior to participating.

When the Hebrew scholars were writing the Septuagint, they decided that "Christos" was the closest word that would mean what "Meshiach" did.

I think Christ put it pretty clear in Jn 14:15 as you quoted. But, what I have come to understand in it's full meaning is to keep the Word of God in your heart and on your mind, by seeking first the kingdom [Matt 6:33]. If we center our lives upon Christ, and the Word which is Christ, then we obey and keep His commandments, which are to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and to love our neighbor. By thinking first of Christ (What Would Jesus Do) [WWJD], then each thought and action is directed by the Spirit, and therefore living in obedience to the will of God. This is how the body of Christ shares it's light with the world. This is the love of Christ in us working through us. This is how we become His hands, His feet, His eyes. This is the power of the cross through His people.

The word "Christ" is from the Greek and means anointed [with oil]. It is not a name but a metaphorical title (as far as I know, the only time that Jesus was actually anointed with oil was when Mary of Magdala washed his feet, dried them and poured precious oil on them. He was, however, baptised with water by John.

The word Christ means the annoited one. He is annoited,
consecrated with power from on high, He is set apart for service on high. That much oil that much power, He is Jesus Christ the son of God, our Saviour, The one Who will come back to earth riding a milk white stallion, and every eye will see Him and every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords for ever and ever amen.

One gets anointed as a symbol of the Holy Spirit, who seals us for God's purpose.

Even a thin veneer of oil preserves perishables.

In biblical times, leaders were often inaugurated by an oil libation on them. (just a few drops on their head.) This was true of all kings. (Which is why we find, for example, that cyrus was called a messiah in the bible.)
