My mother has Ulcerative Colitis and her G.I. doctor is going to perform flexible sigmascope without sedation on her.. She & I want to know peoples advice, do you know anything about it? Effectiveness and pain?

Not typically. It is uncomfortable, but usually not painful. It is better than a full colonoscopy, which goes in around 50 inches. A sigmoidoscopy only goes up the desceding colon (1/3 the distance).

It is effective and necessary in Ulcerative Colitis, especially to determine the extent of the disease. Sometimes afterwards, a person can be cured of Ulcerative Colitis by surgical removal of the impacted colon (as opposed to Crohn's Disease).

In any event, I am sure your mom will do fine. Usually the doctor will give some medicine by mouth to help relax you, if necessary.
