It was painted very long ago. Throughout the years people wondered who the model was but it still remains a mystery.
The Mona Lisa was painted on very thin piece of pine wood in the year 1506 and is very fragile. For this reason it is behind a glass case.
On August 21, 1911, Vincent Peruggia stole it. He felt that it belonged in Italy where it was painted. Two years later, the Mona Lisa was found in Italy and returned to the Louve Museum in Paris.
Artist: Leonardo da Vinci

The last article I read on Mona Lisa stated she was indeed painted on a wood panel, but does not state what kind of wood, sorry. I'm sure it wouldn't take much research to find out, though.

BTW, Thanks for letting me know its painted on wood, been assuming that it was on canvas because wood doesn't seem to be able to outlast canvas. anyway, much thanks.
