After I was offered the position, I was told about the rate of pay and was not too happy about that. I cannot afford to make anything less than what I am making right now... Without being rude, what is the best way to turn down the position?

If you can't afford to take a job that pays less, you don't have too!
Let them know your reasons as to why you can't take the position, but thank them for the opportunity. You never know, they may match your current salary!

Say this: "I am sorry. I am interested in the position, but I am making $$$ at my current job, and I cannot leave for a job paying less no matter how much I like it." Either they will try to match or exceed what you are making now, or they will apologize and move on. It's all in the way you present it, and how much they want you. Just make sure to continue to act professionally, b/c they very well may up the offer. And if they don't, then make sure you thank them for their consideration, and that you hope they will keep you in mind if anything further becomes available in the future. You never can tell. Good luck.

i would write a professional letter or email thanking them for their time and interest in interviewing you and offering the position. tell them unfortunately at this time you have to turn the position down because you simply cannot accept any less than what you are making now (just like you said in your question, don't worry it did not come across as rude or unreasonable). due to the professionalism of your response, you may be offered the pay you want! at the very least you will have handled it in a manner which leave quite a good impression : )

'Thankyou for the offer but I must decline. Although the position seems interesting with opertunity to learn, it would be a pay cut from my current one and at the moment I can't afford to make less then I am.'

I always try to be polite and truthful while balancing positive with the negative. I would definitively suggest mentioning your reasons for declining thier offer since they may have a better one for you.

Well, before anything is the rate set in stone? It's possible that might be negoitable. If not, politely indicate after much thought, I decided not to pursue the position. Or if you still feel guilty, you can always say your current job heard about your leaving and offered a raise to retain you.

Write a note:

Dear Mr./Ms. _____________:

Thank you so much for the offer of employment. Unfortunately I am unable to accept the position as the salary is less than I am currently being compensated.

Again thank you for your kind offer and I hope that we may be able to work together in the future.

Sincerely,

__________

You simply need to put it just the way you wrote it here. If you tell them straight out, they may offer more... It's your life and you're in control of it. Don't feel bad about turning it down.

Tell them the truth, exactly as you explained it here. They may be willing to give you the amount you need.
