It is only bad to eat after 8 if you go to bed early. If you have plenty of time to digest your food, and stay up late, then go ahead and eat late

I don't think I understood the timing aspect of your question, so if I may, I'll just base my answer on an 8 Hr sleep plan. Lets say that your normal bedtime is 10PM toallow for 8Hrs of sleep for a 6AM wake-up. If you ate a full well balanced dinner at 8PM, your body has several things to do in the two hours prior to bedtime. It needs to assimilate proteins, starches, fats and minerals into your body. Here is where the concept of ranges comes into play. If you ate 4oz of grilled chicken, 1oz of lightly buttered bread, 4oz of salad, 1/2 cup of fruit and washed it all down with 16oz of filtered tap water you should wake up fresh as a daisy. If on the other hand, you ate a KFC six piece chicken meal (with 4 biscuits and 2 large sides...lets say baked beans and macaroni and cheese), topped it off with a Friendly's super sized sundae and washed it all down with a six pack of Yeungling, consider yourself lucky if you awake. The body likes to do other things during sleep other than process fats, salt, excess protein and complex sugars... like conducting REM sleep, flushing lactic acid from it's muscles, repairing tissue, and tuning up theimmune system. When you dump load of work on the system like the KFC scenario above right before bed, it's like showing up at a Target with a tractor trailer full of various stock items an hour before the shift lets out. The system gets overloaded, there's much upset and in the end, you either need to provide over-time or something is going to be performed less than satisfactorily.

they say it is bad because most people go to sleep between 9pm & 11pm at night & eating after 8pm wouldnt give time to digest food properly & you can burn off calories very fast while sleeping if you ate really fattening food. so a light snack may be fine now & then or if you tend to stay up later, you can have your last main meal later.

The last time you have eaten vs what time you go to bed is what is considered bad. If you are going to bed with a full stomach then you are more likely to gain weight because of the inactivity. You will not burn as many calories sleeping as you would if you are awake and active.
