Of a house or a car?
Window locks, no glass on doors, bars on windows, security gates on doors, cameras at any entry way or window (could even be fake ones) to deter crime, stickers on windows that your place is watched by surveilence, bushes with thorns by windows, keep trees and brush trimmed so no one can hide while trying to commit vandalism, lots of outdoor lights (powerful), and it you need to hire a security company to watch your place. Many drive by any hour of the day or night and keep watch (some are cheaper than others).

Yeah I vote tazer too, If you shot him, you'd be looking at a lawsuit for sure, and possibly a felony charge. Or even worse, he might get the gun away from you and shoot YOU! No one wants that. Then again, tazering would require you to get up close and personal with him, and if he had a gun or knife, well. Also probably depends on what state you're in. I'm in CA, so we really can't do S out here. But I think in TX for instance, you can shoot someone if they're trying to steal your property (car). (not sure don't quote me). I had my driver's side, back seat window busted out not 1, not 2, but 3 freaking times within a few months, a few years back. My GF at the time was like "dude who did you piss off?" -I still have no idea who did it (well, some idea, but of course no proof), and I still fantasize about catching them in the act. And yeah, the cop that came out pretty much let me know in so many words that he could file a report, it would go in a drawer, and that it was very unlikely anything would happen. Frustrating for sure. Hidden camera?

Watch who does it and follow them home. Wearing a black balaclava break into their home while they are asleep and stick a gun in their mouth while choking them. Say 'If you ever do that again your DEAD!' When you take the gun out of their mouth if they follow you with their eyes punch them in the side of the head. Then escape, you should have an route planed that allows you to sneak to your car and start it without being noticed so you will have to run a bit. Then drive calmly away.
Note: If you can't get a gun then a knife pointed toward the eye is effective too just sit it on the bottom eyelid.

Trip wires attached to plastic explosives. Booby trap everything. Dogs. Lots and lots of vicious dogs. Motion activated search lights and snipers on the roof. 12 foot tall fences topped with razor wire. A moat filled with gasoline to be lit when the bastards approach.

If it is a public place, like the outside of a building, paint a giant mural. If there is something on the wall, most people wont "tag" it. They did this in Minneapolis Im pretty sure and it worked really well.

Take down all big bushes in front of the house
