I don't know if there is any evidence to support that CDs etc can provide more stimulation than a parent.

I recently heard on a news program that "unstructured play" can be more beneficial than the constant barrage of educational structured play that many parents are using. Active play will keep them physically fit too and help in the development of their coordination.

No. It isn't necessary. I have two kids and I'm expecting my third. I'm 21 weeks and we have bought nothing for this child yet. We've learned that most things marketed for babies are just not necessary. If you want to stimulate your infant then just talk to him. Play with him. Carry him around while you get things done. With my second child we bought one of those slings. I carried that child everywhere. While I got chores done he was right there and I talked to him while I did it. I didn't baby talk...I talked to him like I would anyone else. When it was time to cook I'd place him in his high chair. We had one of those that tilted back as an infant seat. I'd cook with him in the kitchen and I'd talk to him. Play, you'll only need the most basic of toys. You don't need any high tech gadgets. Just spend time with your baby.
