My sharpai keeps chewing herself, no flees just digs at her sides and backside. The vet told me she maybe narcissistic. Is that a joke?! I have tried medicated shampoos and creams and everything! Has anyone ever had this hapen with their dog? What can I do?

This is a known condition also known as flank-sucking which occurs in some breeds especially dobermans. There is very little that can be done about it as the cause is completely unknown. It cannot be cured with shampoos, lotions or potions, because it is not a skin condition as such, although it can cause damage in the long term. You should make sure that you are feeding a low protein food, as high protein foods can cause irritation.

Unfortunately , there is little that can be done to cure this habit, as it is believed to be a form of obsessive-compulsive behaviour. The best advice that I can give is to give your dog plenty of exercise, training, and interactive toys to keep her busy and distract her from the behaviour. Good luck!

Actually my dog does the same thing. She licks her paws for no reason and bites at the top of her tail. I've asked vet after vet and have tried everything in the book. Nothing has helped her so now all we can do is watch her more carefully and we ended up getting her a cone for when we are gone. Her legs and butt have gotten a lot better. So your vet might be right because sometimes there isn't any other reason.

sounds like you need to try another vet. The dog may need medication or had an allergy to it's surroundings or a food allergy.
