i own a repair shop,and its caused by the clothes you wear such as a flannel shirt or a jacket,and it is created by friction from rubbing against things that will help create the static charge,it will do it in the summer also if you have on a cool cotton shirt or something that will hold a charge,all your doing is building up a charge and then releasing it to metal,even your shoes can cause this to happen cloth seats in a vehicle do it a lot these days,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Static is caused by friction. Now I've noticed that anytime I wear wool or a sweater, my car shocks the truth into me....so you may wanna check out what you wear

i beleive its like rubbing your shoes on carpet everytime you slide your pants accross the seat of your car. keep in mind that as it gets cold, more people sit in thier car while filling with fuel. i wouldnt do that, but if you do, make sure to touch metal of the car to release that static electricity before you touch near the filler handle.

they sell static guard we use it in are car on the upholstery it works to keep the static down
