I live there and personally cant stand Bourbon st but if youre not from here you should definitely experience it. Check out the alibi, three legged dog(two for one everything all the time), one eyes jacks, Deja Vu (the bar), theyre pretty laid back bars not on Bourbon but close. just walking down bourbon youll have a blast, get some hand grenades and hurricanes, check out pat o's, Razoos, funky pirate, the dungeon, skip utopia, you should go down Decatur and check out Kerrys irish pub, Molly's, the Abby, Mojos, Aunt tikiis, the Dervish and go to the hookah bar, checkpoint charlies, dba, on frenchmen. If you go Up Town go to Igors on St.Charles and the Bulldog, the balcony bar,and Ms.Maes on Magazine and Juans flying Burrito and Slim goodies for food,
and you should go to Deja Vu (the strip club) ill be there not striping but id be happy to wait on you (remember to tip) ;)

We have a place 1/2 block off Bourbon Street. Bourbon is still the place to start. The dividing line for gay-straight bars is Orleans+Bourbon. Karioke at Cat's Meow. Most just walk the street, especially late at night. Daytime not so much. Then for more serious music/nightlife, ask locals about Marigny (pronounced mari-ing-eee)section of town.
Cafe Du Monde, on Decatur Street is a great late night resting place.
Is the French Quarter safe? Yes.
Are other parts of New Orleans as safe? No. Be cautious, not scared, but definitely cautious.
Also, just ask any local. It's not only smart, but it's a great opening line.
Have fun. The city is definitely open and hungry for tourists. We love you-all!

I'd recommend sticking to Bourbon Street for your night time activities. Venturing off to find places that you have no clue where you're going can be dangerous in the city. And very easy to get lost if you drink to much.
Other peoples suggestions are very good. Things sort of depend on your age and taste.
Pat O's and Razoos you have to be 21 or over to get in.
Pat O's is one of the best places to go. Get a Hurricane and head ot the Piano Bar and sing along.
Razoos is a good place to go if you like to dance. And theres a back patio to mingle in.
Bourbon Street Blues Company usually have a band that plays which is always fun.
Stop at Tropical Isle for a hand grenade.
Cat's Meow is fun for Karaoke
Bourbon Cowboy has a mechanical bull... its a country western bar
Utopia is another good dance club
If you want to venture elsewhere. I recommend the Hookah Cafe they have good drinks and hookahs. It's located on Frenchmen Street in the Marigny.

Where to begin... there are so many places near the Inn on Bourbon.... (great place btw)
Pat O'Brien's - get a hurricane here (sit by the fountain)
Tropical Isle - get a hand grenade here (to go unless you want to hear a not so good cover band)
Napoleon House - get lunch here (sit in the patio)
Cats Meow - sing karaoke here (3 for 1 drinks in the afternoon)
Fritzels - unwind and listen to great jazz here
K-Paul's - get a great steak dinner here
Cafe du Monde - get breakfast here
Have fun! I envy you

the French Quarter is basically back to pre-katrina shape. lots of places are open and you won't have any trouble finding something to do. If you like this kind of activity then go visit the zoo or the aquarium.

This weekend is Voodoo Fest, so try to go to that if you can. Otherwise, if you've never been to NOLA, Pat O'Brien's is an absolute must-see. From there just follow the party.
