Excluding Home Depot and Lowes…

I’m having some remodeling work done and I’m really starting to hate that I even started this project. The contractors never show up on time, and sometimes they say they are coming and don’t even show up.

Now the one of contractors screwed up my door order (he reversed the doors-front & back) and now he’s giving me grief about it.

And to think, someone recommended these screwballs!

I am a contractor and it is because of people like you ,I get a lot of business, you have the classic fly by night contractor, one who doesnt care about schedules, quality of work or customer satisfaction,I get a lot of calls from people fed up with these guys and am asked to take over the job ,they then fire the hacks and hire me.I have been doing this a long time and always have happy customers and get a lot of repeat and word of mouth business from them,so there are some of us who do care about our customers and work quality.

I am a contractor. I get screwed by customers too first of all. I lost $5000 this year because the wife signed the contract explaining what she wanted and the husband didn't agree with it so he refused to pay. That doesn't justify shoddy work or poor bedside manner though. Get a few references...not just one(I always offer referneces). Don't push for an exact start date or time frame because things happen (just ask if the contractor will be commited to your job once the work starts). Make sure that the progress payments are reasonable. Pay as you go so that you don't feel like the contractor can run away with your money and the contractor isn't afraid that you won't pay up. If something isn't completed properly at the end hold back a REASONABLE amount of money. Tell this guy you have to give you a bill according to what he has done so far, pay him if it is reasonable and kick him to the curb.

I bought a fixer up house. Over the course of several years, I had a kitchen remodeled, house painted, hardwood floors redone etc. Every contractor had some issues. (I am not that difficult really) None of them finished when they said they would, they all left a mess of some sort, locked the cats in rooms by accident, one left my front door wide open in the middle of winter with a blizzard going on for 6 hours!!! They were late, they were drinking on the job, they didn't show up, they had to come back for touch ups etc. Most of the time it was a nightmare. And I got ripped off once for $700. Some of them tried to bully me, as I am a woman.

Best thing is to make sure you have everything written in a contract - what they are exactly installing, fixing etc. Make sure the quote is itemized. Do lots of research concerning what they are doing so you have general knowledge and an idea of how long things can take. If they don't complete something or it's not done right you have some leverage if you need to dispute the work. Also, do not pay for anything in advance. Do not give them any money until they complete a portion of the work. I am sure there are some great contractors out there. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

I have the utmost negative opinion about South Carolina contractors. You are not alone in misery. According o popular opinion there are two bad thing has to to deal with:
First is an IRS dispute about taxes they claim you own them,
Second any construction project.
Some people claim that dealing with contractor is more difficult then with IRS.

The lesson is, only deal with a contractor who is recommended by many customers and who has been in business for many years. I had a new roof put on my house and a new well drilled, and I am satisfied with both.

Hmm i think for the most part we have, excluding the fact that we hired the most horrible company guy to build our rock wall on the face of the planet..

We had our windows replaced and it was good, We have had workers install new wood flooring and carpets......which was good until i poured dishwasher soap in their coffee.......which pretty much ruined the relationship between us and them ....lol

but we had a rock wall guy who was taking for ever to get stuff done, kept asking for more down payments, never showed up, and just overall built the wall very poorly. Its falling apart now.. So we sued him which bankrupted his company....and we stole his extension chord and cement mixer lol

Yes, everyone does! I do custom artwork and I actually want to make the money and referrals- I can't tell you in 30 years how many murals I finished or redid that another artist quit or screwed up on--lack of class, brains and responsiblity! Just don't forget to laugh- or you'll go crazy!
