"Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law A man's foes shall be they of his own household..." Matthew 10:34-onward Now this is Jesus' words and it kinda goes on like this. What exactly does this mean?

It Means
"Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I DID NOT come to bring PEACE, but a SWORD. For I came to set a man at VARIANCE AGAINST HIS FATHER, and the daughter AGAINST her mother, and the daughter-in-law AGAINST her mother-in-law A man's FOES shall be they of his own HOUSEHOLD..."

Christianity <> Peacefull Religion

Make no mistake, the bible does not teach peace to all. Only the obedient. The inquisition is not a PERVERSION of christian doctrine, it is an EXPRESSION of it.

Families often get divided by Jesus Christ. When a family member comes to faith in Jesus, his/her family may try and talk them out of it. They may go as far as ridiculing the person for their faith.

In many parts of the world, if a person converts to Christianity, it is the duty of a family member to kill the Christian. This is especially true in Muslim countries.

UPDATE: Regarding your question about the sword. The sword is the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12) and it causes much conflict in the world. Just look at all those who ridiculed Christians on this post. Jesus only brings peace when He reigns in His kingdom.

Whether you believe it or not, you are in the middle of a war, the great controversy between Satan and Christ. This war is spiritual, but it has eternal consequences. Each side is advocating for your support, Christ through His blood that was shed for you showing His love for His creation. And, Satan through deceit, force, persecution, temptation and lies. The side Christ is the side of righteousness. Satan's side is the side of evil. Because of this, there is a battle for each person between Christ and Satan. This will set people against each other as the battle lines are drawn. Unfortunately, that will cause some of the worst enemies to be those of your own house. That is what sin does. It separates us from loved ones. Witness the rate of divorce and broken homes.

When a person chooses to follow Jesus, that is exactly what will happen. Variances will come in because of the decision that persons make to follow Jesus.

I was told that you had to read that in context. I take this to mean that you should go back as far as you have to ,,, In the beginning... in my case and read and read... and keep rereading... til you forget all about this particular set of words that Jesus said. Also read it with the help of the Holy Spirit... that'll help. If you do that the Holy Spirit tells you just to ignore that part all together or something. Failing that you must realise that God has allowed you to blind yourself to the true meaning of the whole thing.

It means that the legacy of the Judeo-Christian ethic is violence, discord, and warmongering. He has already:

1. Claimed to be able to influence God.

2. Demanded to be worshipped.

3. Turned his followers into itinerant faith healing ministers.

Why shouldn't he claim the right to set people at each others' throats? It's certainly come true--each sect of Christianity lasts 1.4 years before it splits into two or more subgroups that hate each other and all the other ones. Before that was the case, anyone who disagreed with Mother Church was killed for heresy.

Ripping loyalty away from the family and giving it to the Church helps government to establish primary authority over people. This is crude, primitive totalitarianism, but it works surprisingly well.

Because one in the family will turn to believe in Him there will not be peace in the family. You have to remember that He was speaking to Jews who did not believe that He is the Messiah. Just as when you do something that you parents thought was against what they felt was best for you but you did the opposite, was there peace in you family. This is what this passage means

It means that for those that embrace Christianity that they won't be at peace with the rest of humanity. They will be put into conflict. Parents will disagree with it, extended family will disagree with it. Those who practice it will forever after be marginallized as different for what they believe. Likewise, however it means that they will also be called upon to fight to see things changed so that they are in accordance with their beliefs. It means being a follower doesn't mean a sedate life, but rather hardship, conflict and sacrifice.

The sword of the spirit is the word of God and it is a powerful weapon to defeat the enemy in the SPIRITUAL REALM!!! we do not war against Flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms he could also be referring to being Gods agent to bring judgment on the wicked Romans 13:4 says
For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer
