The word "go" is actually correct.
To me, it means that if it wasn't for God's grace, I could be in a bad situation. And that bad things can happen to anyone, at any time, for no observable reason. That the only thing that keeps them from happening is 'God's grace." Which could be defined as "luck," in a sense.

I think you did mean "go". ; )
It means that, apart from God I could be the truly messed up person I ought to be.
Example: My sister and I are just 15 months apart in age. She is an incredibly lonely, bitter woman. Sadly, she is far more clever, funny, talented and lovely than I am. However, by the grace of God I am contented with my life. We grew up with the same parents and, being very nearly the same age, our circumstances were quite similar. However, she blames everyone else for her problems. I refuse to see myself as a victim and hope I have taught my children to take responsibility for their own situations.

If it weren't for good luck/God's grace etc I would be in the same place as that other poor person. For example, if you used to drink, then quit and later saw a person really struggling with alcoholism, this phrase would apply.
I think it is a reaffirmation of the fallability of all of us. We all make mistakes, we all have bad things happen to us, but sometimes we pull through or make the best of that and we should be aware of just how good that is.

that we are to remember that it's God's walk that we are on, not our own. I've used it when something I've done was totally stupid or in a spot of danger and find myself okay. like in my stupid youth drinking and driving and ending up okay -- there but for the Grace of God goes I. He was watching over and protecting me and it was only by His good Grace that i am here, in time to rectify the situation. like when a car narrowly missed you - there but for the Grace of God you were spared and able to go forward.

Well as I am blessed, given grace from GOD, with my health, job, family, etc. - because of GOD; if these were removed from my life GOD would have to have approved it.
See the story of Job. (I hope it's Job.)
Anyway yes, GOD blesses, sends his grace, and without it a persons life is very different, than with it.

We are saved by God's grace alone. We do not deserve salvation but because of God and His grace, we are. Looking at another poor soul who is not saved and some of the things they do, "There but for the grace of God go I." Were it not for God's grace, I would be the same way.

"Well there but for the grace of God go I." If not for God's amazing grace I would not be here, he would not have forgiven me and put me where I am today. It's because of His grace I am where I am. I owe my life, my breath, my existence, what I am and who I am I owe to Him. He is my Everything.

I could quite easily be in that person's shoes.
It's a sign of empathy for the suffering of others.
