Well going to the ocean from Atlanta is about a 4-5 hour drive. There isn't much to see on the way. You have better luck with seeing stuff in Atlanta & north Georgia. While in Atlanta check out Atlantic Station, it's a new area in Georgia, it is an outdoor kind of mall thing, with lots of new restaurants & clubs. Maybe check out the High Museum of Art, Atlanta History Center, Georgia Aquarium (a good restaurant nearby by is Luckie's Lounge), Oakland Cemetary (some famous people are buried there, like the inventor of Coca-Cola, Margaret Mitchell - the writer of Gone With the Wind, Bobby Jones, some former governors, mayors of Atlanta, stuff like that, they give tours of the cemetary, it really is an interesting place, also nearby is a great little place called "Six Feet Under", you could go there for lunch or dinner. I would say if you want to take a day trip you should drive to Asheville, NC (about a 3 1/2-4 hour drive) - there is alot of nice stuff up that way, including you can tour The Biltmore Estate (they have a botanical garden, winery, hotel, etc.) Or if you want to go to the ocean or near it I suggest driving to Savannah (about 4-5 hours) and visiting Tybee Island, or Hilton Head, SC.

Atlanta is very spread out so is not great as a city to wander around on foot in but there are some good places to go. Buses, taxis and trains can get you around but not that easily - a car helps a lot.
The Atlanta History Centre has a very fine country house next to an old wooden farm house that has been moved to the site.
The Botanic Gardens are very nice especially in Spring.
The Natural History museum has some interesting exhibits but is not as big as some others.
Zoo Atlanta is nicely laid out and is just the right size for an afternoon out.
In summer why not hire a raft at Johnson' s Ferry - just on the North side of the bridge. The scenery is lovely and there is some mild fast water. A bus brings you back from Power's Ferry or Highway 41.
Walking along the river bank through the National Recreation Area is an alternative for the water shy.
There's lots of different types of restaurants and bars. When eating you can usually expect great service and good value even after you've added local sales tax and about 15% tip to the bill.
