That is really simple. In the beginning there was no marriage, only the taking of wives to make large families for survival and wealth. Later, in each developing cutlure, as it matured, that culture began to take on rules. Also, the culture began to evolve from farming to trade and thus entered into tighter organizations socially. Historically we are taught, and in the Bible even, that marriage did not even transpire, legal binding between men and women, until the Hebrews were ruled by the Egyptians. That is the origin of the wedding ring as well. The Rabbis had wives and even mistresses (concubine). Later as the Romans began ruling the known world, mongamy took place and also divorce. Some cultures today even, promulgate poligamy and do not support divorce. So in other words, you are married for life and can have another, but you have to continue supporting one another socially and economically until you die. Which is better? That would depend on the people and the culture. Both poligamy and divorce work to some degree in all societies. Of course any social law such as this can be abused anywhere. By the way, in some countries, it is the woman that supports the man in poligamy and not the reverse.

are you serious?your asking men whats the appeal or women?because no real man would deny this favor from His Lord.and can you Christians really say with confidence that Abraham was an evil man?filled with lust?do you know how many prophets took an additional wife?in Islam it is a means to an end.the practice predates Islam and is practiced by many, many religions.including some christian tribes form Africa.during the birth of Islam there were many wars.many men died.woman were forced into prostitution not by men but by necessity.families torn apart ,homelessness,crime..so in order to mitigate these circumstances on society the once previous no-limit multiple marriages was given legitimacy and sanction was given to no more than four.now, it must be said that in modern times this practices still happens,it is the exception to the rule and not the rule.and i can tell you from experience that it is no walk in the park.it is extremely demanding on ones time and money.and if by chance you happen to have wives who dont care for each other the situation is much worse.i had that problem for the first yr or so.after that alhamdulilah things were fine.even cooking for each other, watching each others kids and stuff like that.so while its not all that its cracked up to be there is a beauty involved that can not be explained.the progenitor of two lines.seeing the fruits of a union that understands that no one is the property of the other.all belong to Allah but none to each other.we are but loans if you will.so if he's planning on taking an additional wife, talk to her if you can .tell her upfront how you feel.my wives didn't do that at first.and i think it cost us a year.and as far as helping to understand,i would say that its impossible to fully understand but not impossible to accept.

Polygamy came into existence thousands of years ago because all the men were being killed off in wars or in years of servitude to slave masters. There were many women and children left without support. The remaining men married several women and supported their children.
It originally had nothing to do with sexual excesses. The same thing was done by the Mormans when crossing the deserts to Utah 200 years ago. It is not practised today except for some fanatical splinter groups.

I don't think I'd do it, but others enjoy the communal environment. More women and more kids means less work for everyone, or so they say. I say I'd be spending my entire day at the sink, rather than being at the sink, the bathroom, the laundry, playing with kids, doing lawn work, etc.
Also, I just don't think I'd want to share a man, my husband is mine and mine alone!

Think about it from a woman's point of view.Several husbands, all at your beck and call.Say you have one really buff one,one extremely intelligent one,one that's really fun,one that's quiet and intense...
Every need you have could really be met that way.In my experience,it's impossible to find all of those things in one man.Not that I would want to do that, myself, but it can be nice to think about sometimes. On the other hand, why the men do it,I don't have a clue.Taking the chance that they all get P.M.S. at once just blows my mind.

Personally I have no idea what the appeal is, but... I guess people get bored easily and want variety.

i think it's like being a pimp.i mean you have all these ladies popping out babies and cleaning your house you get to pick who you want to do ands when...i think its more appealing to men than women.but male polygamists must be nuts who would want to deal with all those tampons, tampax, and im sure there are fights.

this is a question for mormons, they get off on that multiple wives thing. actually, it sounds like a pretty good idea to me. that way if on wife is crabby i can summon another. i can have one wife cooking supper while the other is doing laundry. i like this idea. i'm going to be a mormon.
hey---mormon missionaries on bicycles---over here! over here! i want to convert! over here!
