Look at the nail, if they are clear you can see the pink point inside...that's the quick. If you cut the quick it will bleed. Use the clippers that have the guillitine look...you know where the blade slides up when you squeeze the handles together. I prefer this type for medium to large dogs, small dogs I use human nail clippers.
Start by slicing off a tiny portion of the tip of the nail. If the part showing now is a little flakey or dry you make clip a teeny bit more, BUT if the nail is looking dense or solid, then stop.
It's better to be safe than sorry, so until you get the hang of it just clip a little bit once a week and the nails will eventually get short enough. As you continue to clip the nails the quick will recede and you won't have to clip them as often.
Good Luck.

Go to your vet and ask them to clip your dogs nails, and ask them to show you how to do it. I'm sure that the vet or a vet tech will be willing to help you learn to keep your dog happy and healthy........ Cheers Bogey

your best bet is the vet, i thought that my dog's nails needed to be cut, but it really didnt and the nail could have bleed if we tried it ourselves. the vet will tell you if the nail needs to be cut, and they will cut it for you if needed.

Hold his paw gently between your two hands. Clasp the nail firmly with your front teeth and bite down as you twist the paw. The nail will snap right off in your mouth...then spit it into the nearest metal trash can and enjoy the "ringing" sound.
