During WWI the US Marines were involved in several different campaigns. Several engagements that helped to further Marine reputation during the war were the battles of Soissons, Blanc Mont, the Muese River Campaigns, Verdun, Marbache, and St Mihiel. The most notable however was the fighting in Belleau Wood. It was here that the 4th Marine Brigade so overwhelmed the German defenders that they were dubbed Teufelhunden or "Hell Hound", "Devil Dog". Because they fought so fiercely the German's continued to fear engagements that Marines were involved in for the rest of the war.
A great book to further your knowledge on US Marine involvement in WWI is "Devil Dogs, Fighting Marines of World War I", George B. Clark.

A U.S. Marine.
During the course of the WW1, the Marines took over a village, in which there was a courtyard with decorations of devildogs. They started using this courtyard as the headquarters for the area. Following a fierce battle, the Marines lost control over the village. The Marines quickly took the village back, and because of the fierce fighting to recover the village with the devildog fountain, the Germans gave them the nickname Teufel Hunden.

Nickname given to US Marines by the Germans during combat at Belleau Wood in France. I dont know what kind of devil dog decorations people would hang up, but the truth of the story is that during combat operations, the germans reported back the Marines "bulldog tenacity and fighting spirit." against their frontlines and someone called them the Teufel Hund, a reference to wild mountain dogs of Bavarian folklore. The battle was led by two time medal of honor winner Dan Daly who coined the phrase "Come on you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever."

U.S. Marine from WWI. The Germans called these tough American soldiers Teifel Hunds or something like that. It literally translates to Devil Dog.
