Designing, developing:

Websites, use NVU from the Mozilla suite, running on Linux, as it is very fast. And, FREE!

Graphics, Icons, background rendering, use GIMP, just like all the movies since "Titanic - 1997" on Linux. Run it on beowulf clusters. Free! http://gimp.org and http://livecdlist.com

Word smithing: Open Office does all Microsoft Office file formats, plus, all PDF (Adobe) and Open Document Formats, without regard to revision level. Yep, slide shows, spread sheets, calendars... FREE. http://openoffice.org

Yes, again, it runs upto 50X faster, and doesn't crash, on Linux...

If you get Adobe Photoshop Elements, it gives you the basic stuff and is about 1/10 the price.

Adobe Illustrator CS and Adobe Photoshop are the best for creating graphic design images.
Quark Xpress is great for Layout designs!
These are my absolute favorites...

OPENOFFICE www.openoffice.org is FREE so it is available to everyone. I use it and it is terrific. I have another one that is free too it is called project dogwaffle. http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/free/ It's a paint program but it is also classes as a design program.
