If you want to get tecnical, the president of the United States has the highest rank (i'm pretty sure he's general of the army, or a five star general). Four star general is the second highest rank, i do believe.

General, Lieutenant General, Major General, & Brigadier General are your 4-1 star generals.
The 5 star general is a war-time rank only..."General of the Armies" Created by Congress in 1944. These 5 officers were the only officers to hold 5 star rank in the US Army

The Commander in Chief is the highest rank which happens to be the President. The second one is a 5 star General.

Officers are General of the Army (Wartime only), General and the Lt. General.
Enlisted it is the Sergeant Major of the Army, Command Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major, and then First Sergeant
