I know someone who organised it once in Cardiff. Basically all the women sit around the room and don't move and all the blokes move in a given direction and you have about 30sec to speak to each of the different people.
You check them off a list whether you want to meet them again or not and they do the same. Then you can get matched up based on the people you hit it off with according to the matched up list and then you take it from there.
Well thats we did it, whether thats the proper way or not I dont know..

I will give you serious advice.
Speed dating is not always fun. I am talking from expereince and from what friends said.
Some of the men are losers - no-hopers, old men who have no personality and have never pulled in their lives. Sadly, there are some men looking for a shag only, and there are wierdos who want a young woman.
There are good guys out there, but I say is be careful, and be cautious.
