This is what all my friends and I called winter hats growing up. Now not only do people look at me strangely when I say I'm going to put a toboggan on my head, its not even in the dictionary.

That's hilarious how people think its a regional thing ... from the answers it sounds like its all over except maybe the west ... I grew up in Chicago and that's what we all called our winter hats!

A toboggan is also called a Tuque. It is southern american english. Actually it's French-Canadian. During the 1837 Patriotes Rebellion a red Tuque (Toboggan) became a symbol of French-Canadian nationalism.

That's what I used to call winter hats, specifically the wool and knit pull on hats. I found out when I moved from NJ to VA that it's mainly a term used in the North East. The rest of the US uses toboggan for sledding.

I have experienced the same thing. We called knit caps toboggans too. I thought it might be a regional thing. I moved to Michigan and no one uses that word.
