Actually installing everything will take about 30 minutes (a little longer if you need to download stuff first). Writing a comprehensive how-to for an inexperienced user will take at least several hours (and will be at least somewhat version-specific). So here are your options: (1) bite the bullet and install everything yourself based on documentation, or (2) find someone locally who can help you with installation (posting an ad in your local edition of craiglslist under gigs/computer usually helps), or (3) get a Web hosting account with PHP/MySQL support and go straight to development.

When you write Web pages, especially those using Java / SQL / PHP / etc / etc then you have 2 components:

1. The workstation. This is the basic HTML or ASP pages you're used to.

2. The server. You need to have a server (Apache, IIS. WebSphere, etc running on Linux, Windows, Solaris, etc) that is running the servlets / PHP / java / etc etc that you're programming for. As you've read, this is NOT a 30-minute job using wizards -- I swear it sometimes requires the sacrifice of some virgins.

Another posted suggested finding a hosting service that has what you want in a server. This is kinda okay, but you'll want to have a server next to your workstation while you write code. And, my experience leads me to wonder if any hosting service will have things configured the way that you need it to be configured -- you might have to build a server and send it to the colocation facility (been there done that).

If you want Apache and MySQL and PHP, then I'd download a copy of Linux. SuSE is owned by Novell and gets pretty good reviews. Redhat is #1 in terms of installs I think. There are a bizillion more variants, and we haven't even talked about BSD....

wow, this is not something that you're going to get detailed information from here.

installing apache, mysql, and PHP on a *box is NOT for the faint-of-heart.

your best bet, and what almost EVERYONE does is to host your website with a 3rd party. i use dream host. you can check them out by my source.
