A swollen vulva with clear discharge coming out of it. She may lick it quite a bit. After about 10 or so days, she will start to bleed. There may be a lot of blood or only a little. She may have a slight personality change. Also, her nipples may get swollen.
She does not have to go into the kennel, they sell doggy diapers or what I did for my dog( I got her when she was already in heat) was to put a pair of my 4 year old daughter's underwear on her and cut a hole for the tail. :P She only bled a little so that worked very well.
Dogs are in heat for about 21 days. Keep her away from males! and please, please, please get her fixed. Your dog will thank you for it.
If you cannot afford it, there are probably some low/no cost programs in your area. A quick google search should turn up something.

Her vulva will be swollen. She will bleed for the first week or so. She will flirt with other dogs, both male and female. A lot of male dogs may start coming around. Her teats may be slightly swollen. Keep her put up so she doesn't get bred, specially if she is under 18 months, and it sounds like she is young if this is her first heat.

look for her to start wanting to go outside more, some spotting (little spots of blood), and her private and nipples will swell up. If she is an outside dog and you don't want puppies i would put her in a kennel. Or take the smart route and have her spayed when she is out of season. Good luck!

She cleans herself all the time & will want to be outside alot, as her body is telling her to reproduce, now I must find a mate type attitude.
bleeding can be profuse or hardley noticable, generally dogs come into season twice a year if they are left unfertilised.

She will change her atitude and maybe whine. She might have some pink discharge and her nipples may enlarge.

Very simple. If the female sex organ becomes swollen and red, it's time to put her in the cage. (There is no other sign)
