If you go to a cake decorating store or a craft store such as Michael's you will find black food coloring. You could also order it online. If you start with chocolate frosting it won't take too much coloring to make it black. sometimes it can get bitter tasting if you use a lot of coloring.

For Black Icing

Now, if you already have black food color, you can mix up just about any plain icing, load it with color, and start icing. Here's a very basic recipe if you don't have a favorite of your own:

Royal Icing
From Homemade Halloween (Canada, UK) by the editors of Country Living magazine.

Ingredients:

1 1-pound package (3-1/2 cups) confectioners' sugar
3 large egg whites or equivalent amount of meringue powder
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
Black paste food coloring

Instructions:

In a large bowl, with an electric mixer on low speed, beat the confectioners' sugar, egg whites, and cream of tartar until mixed. Increase the speed to high and beat about 5 minutes, or until very thick and fluffy. Color the frosting black. Cover tightly with plastic wrap to prevent drying until ready to use. When ready, transfer some of the frosting to a medium-size bowl and beat in a few teaspoons of water, if necessary, until it reaches a spreadable consistency.

I looked on line and they talked about black food coloring or black paste. If you live in a larger town you should have a larger gourmet food store or a restaurant supply store. Call them or even try calling Michael's or a craft store, they sell cake decorating supplies along with candy molds, etc.. and I would imagine they have a big Halloween push going on so lots of black!. You also might want to talk to the bakery at your grocery store and see if they will sell you what they use.

True black frosting is made black with "charcoal" Check the baking department at the store or ask a local bakery for some. My mom worked at a bakery is how I know. Good luck

Go to a store that sells alot of cake and decoration and they have black food coloring it comes in a little jar and when you open it , it has a seal take a pointed knife and poke a little hole in it and use a toothpick and get some of the food coloring out ,it's different the ordinary food coloring it's real thick. the reason to put a small hole in the seal is for the rest of the coloring won't dry out. I use this food coloring . Wiltons puts it out.(name brand)

You need to get black paste color. The liquid food coloring won't work. If its a buttercreme icing, it will darken as it sits. Have fun and if your whole cake is going to be mostly black, so will your guests mouths and tongues.

Black is the presence of all colors. I think if you mix as many colors as you can get you will get black frosting. Mix em all!!

THIS CAN BE DONE FAIRLY EASILY BY USING CHOCOLATE ICING MIXED WITH BLACK ICING COLOR BY WILTON.

USING A TOOTHPICK, ADD SOME OF THE BLACK COLORING TO THE CHOCOLATE ICING AND MIX UNTIL YOU GET THE DARKNESS YOU WANT.

IF YOU USE WHITE ICING, YOU WILL NEVER GET A TRUE BLACK COLOR.

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THE WILTON COLORING AT MOST CRAFT STORES OR EVEN AT WALMART.
