The problem with not taking it entirely literally, rather than completely or not at all, is that there is no way to tell exactly which parts of it to take literally. Did Noah's Ark really happen, despite all of the arguments against it? Should we be following the second set of commandments? How can you claim that some of this is metaphorical, yet some of it is completely irrefutable?

not me. It takes a certain amount of intelligence to be able to understand what is abstract. There are those who can not read but can hear ti understand but there are far more that can not go beyond the concrete. The Bible and what it says would be leaving very many people without a way to understand God if they had to be able to reason beyond the literal. If there was not a literal truth in most of the word then many would be left without a witness. As it is written most chapters contain layered truths. At each rereading of a scripture added information appears. The simplest layer is the literal. The additional layers in my experience are additions to the literal, and so the literal needs be understood first. I have twice been in churches where one of the sincerest and most lovable believers were not in the least bit bright. They understood just a few literal truths

Yes and even then we don't know a deity intended it to be that way. The bible was put together by a committee who decided what to include and not to include. For all we know.. man had the intentions not deities.

It is not possible to say what God intended because you cannot even prove that God exists. If you cannot even prove God exists you cannot say anything meaningful about God.

I highly recommend reading " Conversations with God" I forget the author, but it touches on that, and confirms the believers, but not fanatics idea of it all
