Look I know about the stigma all too well. I take meds and follow directions to a "T". And I also do understand about not wanting get back in a relationship with someone who is bp because of getting abused. But my Statement remains, I tell the turth and get burnt or lie and Feel like a Jerk?

any person can snap for the right reason. The stigma Surrounding BP and Violence is such in most cases is a false view.

Bp is NOT a personality Disorder . It is however a Mood Disorder.

PS. I have dated BP women and they are each different in their own way. Some are Stable as a rock and other are Hell on wheels. But I've had "normal" women be hell on wheels too so go figure.

Alison I'd like to thank you and the rest of you for trying. I know it's hard when Us BP's are sick. All I ask it that if a woman or man is on a date with a BP that they give them a fair and equal chance.

So don't tell them you're bipolar.
Reasons they need to know you're bipolar:
1) You're really, really serious
2) They just found your meds in the bathroom cabinet and want to know what the hell they are
3) You have a psychiatrist appointment and they want to know why you are going to doc's
I'm bipolar and don't feel the need to tell strangers about it. A few close friends know, but that's all. Oh, and the whole damned internet, but they don't know me.

Because bipolar people tend to have really bad mood swings. Who would want to enter into a relationship knowing this? If you are taking your medicine than the mood swings will be under control and there is no reason to tell someone about your disorder on the first date. Most people with high blood pressure or diabetes don't announce it on the first date so why should you ( providing that you are on medication and got it under control).

It is worrisome to get involved with someone you know has a personality disorder. What if the person flips out and hurts you? There are various degrees but I have had relationships with alot of disfunctional people and choose to be with someone that has it together. I know you can't help your disorder but it will take someone strong, very understanding and patient to be your partner. The good thing is, if you are on medication and getting help then at least you are ahead of the game compared to the people out there with problems that are still in denial...

I married someone who was bipolar. I suffered a horrible life for years. He never got his meds right-even when I kept control of them. He didn't take what he should and kept having hallucinations.
Now I would run as fast as I could to get away. I don't mean to insult you since you are probably someone who takes care with his meds., but I could never take that chance again.

Because of the stigma attached to mental illness. The right girl for you will not run. It can be hard living with someone with any illness, but if you are doing you best to control symptoms and see your doctor when neccessary you are on the right track. Like I said the right girl will stay around.

You have to stay on medication. Keep your moods stable. When a bi-polar has a temper tantrum it can be really scary for all those around them. Be conscious of your moods - stay on a medication even if you don't think you need it.

truthfully, it is because most poeple with a disorder like that, do not stay on the meds...and then start acting in a way no one wants to deal with. I was married to a schizophrenic that refused to stay on his meds....3 years was enough for me. wildest 3 year ride of my life...and hope to NEVER repeat it. I am sorry, and maybe you do stay in your meds....but I would never ever chance that again. I wish you well, and good luck.

I would think the bi-polar thing is none of their business unless you have been dating for a few months, at least.
And if she still wants to date you after a few months, then being bi-polar shouldn't be an issue.
