There is no difference. It is just like Soda and Pop. It all depends on where you live on what you call it. Different places have different names for the same things..

Where I'm from (Jamaica), a yam and a sweet potato are totally different. A yam is a very starchy, non-sweet (savoury) root that is generally heavier in texture (denser) than the sweet potato. The skin of the yam is usually brown in colour and the flesh is usually white or yellow, depending on the variety. Sweet potatoes are, as the name suggests, sweet and the skin is usually red or pale orange. Hope this helps. If you email me, I can send you some pictures.

Sweet potatoes are not potatoes but a root belonging to the morning-glory family. They are indigenous to Peru and Ecuador. Yams, although similar, are a tuber from the Dioscoreaceae family and originated in Africa. The confusion began many years ago when Louisiana farmers wished to differentiate their sweet potatoes from others by calling them Louisiana yams.

WRONG! All of you who say that they are the same thing are wrong!

Yams are light purple on the inside, they are true yams. The taro is also a yam.

Sweet potatoes are orange on the inside. They are incorrectly mislabeled by Americans as yams.

Same as the difference between a square and a rombus. A sweet potato is a yam, but a yam is not necessarily a sweet potato. If you catch my drift tough guy.
