Any advise would be appreciated. I have a choice of a Nissan Altima 2006 with 40000 kms around CAN$22000 all taxes included
or a 2005 Toyota Corolla with 50000kms on it for CAN$18500 all taxes included. I'll be driving in the snow and ice and sub-zero temperatures. The cost isn't the main issue, it's just that I don't know either model well so any comments would be welcomed especially relating to safety and comfort.

I own a Corolla and I have over 100,000 miles on it and it is still going strong! It is a 2003 model. No major repairs and great on the gas milage! I also love the way it looks and handles. I have taken it on long trips and my back does not suffer nor my legs.

I own a 2005 altima, and my best friend has a corolla.
The altima is an excellent car, and its very sexy, as far as looks go, its much nicer to look at than the teeny corolla.
Altima goes a lot faster than her corolla.
The 2006 body style is very popular, so if you do want to resell it, you will get a fair price for it.
The Altima is much more comfortable. I'm 5'8 and I need my leg room. When I sat in the back seat of my best friend's Corolla, I always had to sit sideways so the seat wouldn't hurt my knees. Even in the passenger seat, I would have to scoot all the way back to be comfortable. The Altima has a nicer sound system. Altima with tinted windows looks hot. Corollas, not so much.
Altimas have way WAY bigger trunk space and head room. I would not be as scared to be in a fender bender with the Altima than with the Corolla. (We got rear ended in her Corolla, with very little damage, BUT we felt the impact a lot more and we actually thought there was severe damage until we got out the car.) I also have driven my Altima to the snowy mountains, and was very pleased at how it handled. Altima handles very well, so well that I got a flat tire once on my Altima, and I didn't feel it until the very end. The Corolla, one time we were rounding a curve in the rain, and car swerved into a curb and popped her tire. I like the black interior with the chrome on the Altimas, and they can come with GPS and sunroof too. As far as comfort goes, I've been on many road trips (more than 8 hours) in my Altima, and comfort is 5 stars. I have also been on road trips in the Corolla (2 hours or so) and comfort...about 2 1/2 stars. The AC works a lot better than the Corolla. Safety, I'm not too sure about, but the handling on the Altima has sure helped me steer my way and avoiding several impending accidents.
And also, if you think about it, the Toyota Corolla is equivalent to the Nissan's Sentra. (i don't like the sentra either.)
The best deal for you will definitely be with the Altima!

The Altima is a lot more car in every respect. It will easily carry five people whereas the Corolla is cramped with 4. The trunk is significantly bigger and the Nissan just feels more substantial on the highway. My daughter owns a 2004 Corolla that has been an extreme disappointment.

The Bozo below that says the Altima will rust sooner is smoking something. Check out all the rust bucket Toyotas in new England. Altimas resist rust as well as anything made.

Get the Altima

They are different cars, let me explain. Nissan runs models in-between Toyota models. The Altima is larger than a Corolla, but smaller than the Camry (were-as a Maxima is bigger than a Camry, but smaller than an Avalon...). If the size of the Corolla is satisfactory, the mileage will be better and will last along time. The Altima (also good car, slightly larger) has more power, less mileage and prob. more money. The choice is simply up to your individual needs, both cars will prove themselves as a good purchase. good luck!

Altima is larger car. Might hold up better in showy north. Cannot Fault Toyota reliability. I would think all wheel drive would be what you need. Audi A-3 or Audi A-4 with quatro all wheel drive much more expensive. But there is the Subarau sedans about the same price range your looking at. And Brand new Suzuki small lowest price all wheel drive car. That little car will become popular this winter.

The Nissan------they stand by their cars. I bought a 6 year old Nissan at a private dealership the automatic seat belt assembly got messed up I took it to a dealership that sold Nissans the cost of the complete assembly would have been over $1000- Nissan replaced it because it was a safety issue. Get the Nissan. They are like the bunny they keep going and going and going.

I have driven the two cars and i love the altima as it is more refined and has a larger interior and trunk capacity than the corolla

the nissan drives much nicer and feels to hug the road more

if i were you i would drive both vehicles and tehn decide - i think they both stand up to sub-zero temperatures and would recommend you use a good synthetic oil in the engine

If you go by the consumers reports then Toyotas are the best in overall areas. Depends on the real things you are looking for in a vehicle - which it sounds like reliability, then you propably wouldn't go wrong with either, just that Toyota gets a better rating.....

Altima will have a lot more power and solid feel. Drive them both and see which one "feels" better to you. They're both great for safety and reliability. Which one can you "see" your self in, comfortably. (Which one will you wake up in the morning and be glad yo got it)?
