Mount Mazama is in the Cascade Range, in Oregon. It once was an active volcano, which exploded 600,000 years ago with such force that its ash cloud covered half of North America; the bowl of its crater is now Crater Lake.

Mazama was one of the major Quaternary volcanoes of the Cascade Range. About 6,850 years ago Mount Mazama, a stratovolcano, collapsed to produce Crater Lake, one of the world's best known calderas.
