The head gaskets were known to have sealing issues. I don't remember if it was the torque as capri said or if it was a gasket issue... But the fix is the replace the head gaskets and usually the price as some have said is close to a grand. No recalls for that.. even if they did, it would have expired years ago, as Ford's customer satisfaction recalls usually run out after 10 years

You could be thinking of the 3.8L v6. It was used in the Taurus and I think was even put in the Mustang and unfortunately it was known for blowing head gaskets. I know someone with 3 cars with the 3.8 in them and has never had that problem. So, clearly it does not happen with all of them but must have happened with enough of them to be considered a common problem. Should it happen your local mechanic could replace it. The gasket kit runs about $75.00 or so and whatever labor is in your area.

I can't verify which year of mustang it was, but there was a recall on the head gaskets, which were causing major damage--it is possible that this is still an open recall on your vehicle-if so, there will be no charge for the repairs--call your local ford dealership, have your serial number, and ask the service department to run on oasis on your serial number--this will tell them of any recalls that have or have NOT been done on your vehicle-it is possible that someone already did the recall you as asking about.

I used to work for a ford dealer ship and yes that would be true. For some reason when ford was putting those engines together they torqued the head gaskets to the wrong specs. I dont think it was ever a recall but it was fixed in 1998.

Ford had an issue with the head gaskets on 3.8l motors blowing, a revised head gasket and torque proceedure took care of this.

First check for recalls on line, then call a ford dealer repair shop, they may help over the phone.
