Home Depot and Lowes carry 4x8 and smaller sheets of 1/4 and 1/16-inch hardboard, not art board, and not Masonite which is a brand. Home Depot offers a brown composition board with smooth on top and rough on bottom surfaces as well as a wood composition board that is smooth on both sides and light color in appearance (Ecuaboard, I think it's called) and Lowes carries similar products. Whichever you get, lightly sand the surface before using gesso. I use a lot of this stuff (both brown and light) and Home Depot will even cut the 4x8 to sizes you prefer. An alternative is to buy (same places) a hollow core door which runs about $24 for a 36 x 80. Really nice surface to paint on, prepared for gesso same way. I cut my door in half but then need to add 1x2s (cut to fit) to fill in the edges made from the cut. You need a table saw for that, but the final painting surface is wonderful and lightweight...and less costly than similarly sized canvases..

HI norway_steve, I'm not from CA so I'm sorry I can't help you locate Filipinos doing balikbayan box forwarding service. As for sending valuable items, send it at your own risk. I've never had a problem sending valuable items in my boxes but the balikbayan box forwarders who are also my friends advised me not to declare it on the list (I guess so no one will be tempted to check it out) My mom received all items in my boxes. Another tip: Don't declare the value of your box to be $100 or more, I've heard someone's box is taxed and held in customs for doing that.

usually you can get that from lumber stores like Home Depo or Lowes, if not they can point you to where you can get a bigger piece of it.
