Dogs or cats should never be left outside. They deserve the comforts just like you or I do. Maybe you should try sitting outside in the cold and then you will know what we mean by that. Dogs are pack animals and need to be with their packs. You and your family are the dogs pack. Let him live inside with you. Answer this would you leave one of your kids out in a kennel in the cold? (that is if you have kids) I think not.

When to bring your dog inside largely depends on what temperatures your K-9 companion is comfortable in and used to. Since you have fairly large dog, you don’t have to worry about temperature quite as much as small breed owners, but you should still know when it’s to hot or too cold. Usually a safe range for medium to large dog breeds is 30 - 70 degrees (give or take). This said, if your dog is used to, or prefers warmer temperatures to cooler temperature or vice versa, you should assume that they are more comfortable and safer in that temperature. You also shouldn’t rely on what temperatures you would want to be outside in. Why? Because look at it like this: you may love the weather when the sun us shining and it’s 80 degrees out. But you have to keep in mind that your dog runs at a toasty 101 degrees Fahrenheit and has a fur coat that he can’t take off. Lastly, just use common since. If there’s high winds, a heat wave, a snow storm, rain, ect, keep your dog inside. Hope this helped! -Victoria-

Hello People ...... I dog is an animal .... and German Shepherd have really thick double coat fur and skin that act as insulation ... i would be more worried about it being to hot in the summer then to cold outside for them as long as they can keep dry there fine.. you guys know how cold it gets in Germany...a gsd is not a chihuahua..... like anything watch the dog if he is acting cold then bring him in.... i am so tired of people and there emotional responses....again a dog is an animal.. if anything it is wrong to keep dogs inside and treat it like a person... because that is not how a dogs instincts work.. talk to dog trainers and they will tell you that treating your dog as a child is unfair to the dog and confusing to them.. again for the above comments saying try to go out side and stay out there.... how about you put on the two thickest coats you have and sit in your home with your heat set the way you normally do....and dogs don t sweat so don t do that either

Ok this is going to sound like I'm nuts , but I had a German Shepard that would not stay in the house for anything! in one door and out the other! I don't care how cold it got! there were several nights below 0' and I would think he can't stay out there in this! Well I brought him in 3 times before I quit trying! he literally tore the back door apart! I mean to where his paws were bleeding! Hello! it depends on the animal! the next Shepard I had she didn't even want to go out to pee. She was out the door did her duty and back in! did not like the cold! So! hard question to answer! just depends on the Dog! but I would definately try inside that is so much more humane!
Do you have insulation in the kennel? such as hay for him to sleep on?

Although I would not do it, I think the dog would be ok outside at 35 degrees. Past that, he would be inside. If you have to leave him out, make sure there is hay in his dog house and possibly a small light bulb in the dog house. My ex built a dog house and put a light in it and thought I would leave my Peke outside. Boy was he in for a shock. I have 2 boxers and they spend most of the day and all night in the house. They are crated at night and quite content.

I would not leave my dog out in weather below -5 IF YOU ARE HOME. The wind chill can drop this by up to 15 degrees while you are out and then your poor dog is outside. Make sure your dog has a blanket in their dog house they can crawl under if the weather changes. Weather can be unpredictable. Use your best judgement.

German Sheps were bred to tolerate cold and patrol outdoors. Most outdoor dogs have a two layer coat that makes them water resistant. Some Dogs like a Siberian Husky can be safe in -40. My shep seems to want to be in when 20 or below, golden retriever does not seem to be bothered at any weather condition, the husky loves to bed down in snow when it does. In summer I have to make sure husky stays cool although her coat deflects sunlight to keep her cool. It is amazing how nature works. nj area here

I would say that at 40 degrees you should bring him in. Shepherds are very hearty dogs but how would you feel being left out in the cold? Shepherds are very family oriented dogs and love their owners. I'm sure he wouldn't mind being kept in a isolated area as long as it is warm rather than being outside.

I have a chow mix and he stays out all winter . He has a house enclosed by a vinyl sided building- You have to remember that dogs were made to be outside, they have all that fur for a reason.
I know alot of people bring their dogs in the house, out of kindness but it is not necessary unless you have extreme weather- I'd be more worried about a dog in the summer heat than in the cold. ( unless it's sub zero weather)
