I have a 1 year old baby. You can see his baby picture as my id.

Anyway, the initial cost of getting your baby will be your biggest "single" expense. Be sure to research, research, research your breeders and see the parents before you buy, preferibly in their home enviroment. If you don't get that "warm and fuzzy feeling" leave and keep looking! If this is your first yorkie (I say that because once you have 1, you'll want another), try to stay in the 6-8 pound adult weight. This will help you to stay away from some of the health issues, but they will always be a possibility.

If you are really good and diligent about brushing daily and bathing regularly, then you're on the right track. The brushes can really vary in price, but plan on spending around $20-$30 for a good starting set. To help curb the vet bills, I went to Petsmart and the Banfield group there. They have plans that are roughly $100 to start and $20ish/month that will cover all shots and a spay/neuter in the first 6 months if you choose. I suggest the spay/neuter if you're not planning on breeding, it's healthier for the dog.

I have Roscoe groomed about once every 6-8 weeks, depending on the time of year. He gets shaved in summer to about a 3 inch coat to keep him cool, and the winter is a long coat. This runs around $35-$40 each time.

Be sure to use a good food, Nutro, Eukanuba, etc. to help with health and coat. A small bag will last a long time and runs around $8-$10. Lots of love an attention is a must as these little guys want all of your attention. Roscoe has been raised around kids, mine and neighbors, so he's great with children.

A really great source of info are the groups here in Yahoo. YorkiesUnlimited is a personal favorite with great friendly people and lots of free info.

I hope this helps.
Good luck!

If your dog is not going to be around other dogs much, then just get the minimal shots. I don't know where you live but PETA actually offers very LOW cost spaying and SHOTS for dogs, call them.

If you buy into the idea that you need to take your dog to the vet several times a year, expect roughly a $40 fee just to walk in the door EACH time.

If you don't get the dog fixed, he will be more expensive.

If you buy decent food, which can be gotten at walmart...and use human shampoo with aloe, the costs are negligible.

And congrats on finding a yorkie for free! They go for $600 to $2000

Grooming is something you will have to research in your area but it is dependant on the style of grooming. My Yorkie is kept shaved and it costs me $30 per shave and I shave her about every 8 weeks. Food, treats, bones and toys are all an added expense. This will depend on the type of food you give the puppy. I use Nutro-max puppy and my Yorkie has a healthy appetite. One 5kg bag will last me about 3 months and it runs be about $20 per bag. You will want to occupy some of their time with bones and toys. The amount is up to you. Hope this helps.

Dogs are not cheap to own and you should have realized this before making the commitment to own a dog. If you feel that you are becoming overwhelmed by the costs, then you should try and rehome the dog. You can expect to spend between $400-$800 a year for a dog which includes general care, vet visits, food, etc. If you happen to get a sickly dog or one with some kind of medical problem, you can expect to spend quite a deal more. It's a hard decision to make when you are attached to a pet, but you really have to consider the welfare of the animal.

Yorkies don't eat very much, but grooming is a nightmare if you keep them looking great, daily brushing is a must unless clipped in the puppy cut. Also keeping a pup up to date on its' vaccinations/dewormings,along with any medical problems it may incounter during its' lifetime could run into a little money, but the rewards of their love and is worth it .

The food is not that costly but the shots and if the dog gets sick then you are talking dollars. My son has a yorkie and loves it. Very very smart dogs. They used to be working dogs,

usaully vet care is:
$75.00 per shot ( you need three of these every three weeks)
Deworming is included when you get a vet check
A vet check is around $50.00
Yearly check ups after that is around $75.00
And fixing your dog is probably around $150.00 range!!
oh and go to the vets to price out food and toys!!

could be just the cost of those items or if your puppy gets sick it could be thousands of dollars (not kidding) in veterinary care. Yearly check ups and shots can run you 200$ or more.
