Probably because the leaves fall of the trees, not sure. What does amaze me, is that you just found out the Americans call it the "Fall". I live in England and have known of this since I was a little kid, as no doubt many other people do.

The word fall was coined because of the falling leaves.
Well, autumn and fall have the same meaning, just one of the many different word usage in the UK and USA...like pavement and sidewalk, chemist and drugstore, handbag and purse etc.
