My corgi just had her litter of 1 nearly 3 weeks ago. We discovered the monther had fleas during the pregnancy period but we didn't use any treatments because I was under the impression that its unsafe to use any flea products on very young puppies or monther dogs so close to welping. Perhaps it would have been ok to do it then but its too late to go back now, so the point on that would be mute anyhow. What can I do to SAFELY get rid of them for both the mother and pup?

I would consult your vet. Because the puppy is so young, you can't use most products (ex. advantage frontline). Your vet is the only one who can give you a good product that won't hurt the mom or the puppy!
Good Luck!

There are products that are safe to use on a nursing female . If you can get rid of fleas on her, half the battle is won. If the puppies fleas jump on her, those fleas will also die. There are also products you can use on 4 week old puppies. You will find products that are safe to use on the Drs. Foster & Smith Pet Education site, http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1588&articleid=598
. I would suggest that you ask your vet about these products before using them.

The only other alternative is to use a flea comb and finger nails (crush the fleas between two finger nails). This has to be done constantly (at least once a day). Of course the bedding has to be refreshed often.

1) Don't buy a special shampoo

2) Bathe the dogs all at the same time and then get them out of the house while you flea bomb the house..according to directions!!

Fleas jump on, bite the dog, then jump off..into your carpet, clothes etc.
YOU MUST treat everywhere at the same time or just go round and round. Shampoo the dog up REALLY WELL to DROWN The fleas.

Consider a flea preventative from the store, like frontline when old enough.

Your only hope would be to use the orginal "DAWN" dish washing liquid to bath them in,but be sure to rinse well, both Mom and pups. This is very safe and will kill all fleas. You can't put any flea meds on Mom or pups while she is nurseing, and when pups are 7 wks,you can put the Advantage on both according to weight of Mom and each pup.It is a good idea to also remove all pets from lawn and spray with something that will kill fleas, just ask at any local feed store.Don't allow pets on lawn til dry,and wouldn't suggest letting pups on lawn after spraying for the fleas.

You can try feeding the mother some Brewers Yeast. This will annoy the fleas and is healthy for her and the pups. I would talk to your vet because the puppy's are too young to give anything to. You risk contaminating the mothers Milk with anything like Advantix.

The mother can have Frontline put on her. That is okay in pregnant and nursing mothers. The puppy is too young for that yet. Soap and water is good and flea comb until the puppy is 6 weeks old.
Do not use Hartz on any animal of any age!

You need to take your mom and pups to the vet and they can determine if indeed they do have fleas. From there, they can let you know the proper treatment for fleas. You will need to treat all the dogs to ensure the fleas are gone.
Good luck!

Flea shampoo is safe. We used it on young pups at the humane society. It does need to stay on the animal for 5 minutes though, so make sure when you bathe the pups they are kept warm.

You most certainly can tell if your dog has fleas without bringing them to the vet.

But I do think you should consult a vet about this. Depending on the severity of the infestation, it could have really horrible effects on mom and baby, including death.

You can't use any of the treatments like frontline or powders or dips yet. When I worked in a pet store, people swore by Dawn dish detergent. Make sure you use the original blue version. None of the fancy fragranced ones or antibacterial or anything like that. Lather the pup up and let it sit for a couple minutes. Make sure you don't get it in the eyes as it's not tearless and make sure you dont get it in their noses or ears either.

Good Luck!
