What roles do celebrites play in advertising?

Do you think they have a responsiblity to the consumer?

I am a marketer; celebs are used to achieve the following;

1- More product/ company credibility - phsycologically when u see a star telling u about a product or a service, u trust that brand. People tend to think if this famous, rich person is advocating brand x, then it must be good and reliable, I will buy it!

2- Ad recall - viewers are more likely to remember ads with celebs. Ad recall is a very important measurment for the sucess of an ad.

3- Word of mouth generation - people are more likely to talk about an ad or a product if it featured a celebrity, thus telling more people about it and spreading the word about the product.

Easy and cunning, right?

nah not really..celebrities are just used to sell a product or to get the consumers attention because their favorite celebrity might be using the product or something..but aside from that they dont have any responsability to the consumer at all what-so-ever

first really dont read any of the answers except for FOZIO... he knows what he is talking about. I work in advertising and totally agree with what he wrote....celebrities are used for those purposes exactly, plus advertisers chose celebrities based on what they have in common or how inline they are with their product or brand....

They are paid to 'appear' to draw people's attention ....hopefully to the product.

They are responsible to whoever signs their payslip.
