This is a person you know and greet in the hallway everyday. How many seconds would be considered 'prolonged' eye contact?

Rather than going by how many seconds, I would go by how many times does this repeatedly happen! If it happens at least 3 times with the same person, then it is obvious that there is a mutual attraction. Now it is up to one of you to break the ice with words!

4 seconds based on the reality show this summer that tried to find dates for four single women. they went over every date fact and 4 seconds was the flirting eye contact rule and it does work.

EYE CONTACT IS A POWERFUL TOOL ISN'T IT??

It's like this: so much is conveyed through eye contact. If the message was recieved then the "contact" was made!

I'm a woman, and what I think consitutes too long probably is less than what a guy would consider too long. My answer = 1 second, 2 max.
