You've got my vote! I don't believe he has reached 75, but he's darn close to it, and although he is a former navy pilot, i don't believe he has seen combat.

He had his try at winning this war, actually he had it won and it slipped away. There should be no Mulligan's in wartime!

Rumsfield made one mistake, he let a four star army general with aspirations of a political career make the decisions regarding how to start and maintain combat operations in Iraq. Everything since then has been a blow back from that. How wonderful it would look on a political resume to say, "I invaded and defeated Iraq in less than a month". But the issue was, instead of squeezing the enemy into one place and surrounding them, we push straight to the heart and left our flanks exposed. We didnt reduce the enemy's numbers enough prior to hitting baghdad. In the end, we put ourselves into the middle of a hornets nest. We sacrificed a smart victory for a quick one. Now, we have to fight outward and find the enemy we should have forced into the center of the country. Rumsfield is now backpedaling, that four start general no longer looks like Schwarzkopf and now looks like Bonaparte. Good luck Tommy Franks. It doesnt matter who is put in now, the real work will still have to be done on the ground overseas.

Rumsfeld is very competent and qualified. He has always succeeded at what he has attempted. Remember this is his 2nd time as Secretary of Defense. He is also now the longest serving S of D. He was also the youngest S of D at 35 years old during the 1st bush admin.

I agree though... i think military serve (particularly infantry) should be prized above most else.

Rumsfeld's incompetence has little to do with either his age (he's in his 70s) or his background - but his attitude and personality. He is arrogant, narrow-minded, and driven more by a political agenda than abything else. He is also, first and foremost, a veteran of the corporate world, which means he values profits more than humans.

It's a civilian position, but maybe in a time of war someone with military experiance should run it, but in peacetime we need an effective administrator, of course it would be nice if a military person with that ability.

Way way way past time, and this has nothing to do with his age.
