I want to know because I'm going to take a religion class in a few months.

I believe that all you need to do is face a certain direction and say something like, "Allah is the one true god, and Muhammad is his prophet" three times. But I could be mistaken. After that it is a matter of studying and learning about the faith that you claim.

Saying the Shahada. Basically, you affirm Islam's idea of God by saying "There is no God but Allah".
This however is not enough. You must then affirm Muhammad by saying "and Muhammad was his final messanger. Apparently Allah cant except you unless you acknoweldge Muhammad.
Finally, many Muslims require that you disaffirm Christianty with the added "he begets not, nor is he begotten". This is basically a stab at Christians or a requirement to spit venom at the claim that God gave humanity a savior in the form of "son".

1) Don't listen to most of the losers here,
2) Study Islam
3) Read the Qur'an
4) Talk to Muslims, ask questions
5) Be sure you understand and accept all of Islam before you decide to convert/revert

cleaning your body and your heart is recommended, then you say truly from your heart:
"La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadon Rasolo Allah" , which means there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the prophet of Allah.
then you have to believe in all prophets of God, day of judgement.
