There is nothing more important than being able to communicate effectively. Studying the English language will help you to become a person that can communicate your ideas and thoughts accurately to others. You could be the smartest person around, but if you cannot communicate your knowledge to others, your knowledge is wasted.

If you are seeking a job, wouldn't you like to impress the person interviewing you with your skills? Of course you would. But if you do not have a command of the English language, you probably would fail to communicate just how good you are.

People judge other people by the way they express themselves. Using bad English is a big negative in most people's appraisal of you.

Maybe you think that you know how to speak English well after going through Grades K through 8, but I doubt that you have mastered the language at all. If I were you, I would spend as much time as possible studying the English language including grammar, spelling and sentence structure.

In high school English, you will learn the most basic fundamentals of the English language. You will most likely be ill-prepared for college-level English; so be prepared to study a little harder.

This forum is full of people that are woefully inept at English.

well there is a lot actually. i really suck at english a lot but now i have realized that there is so much of it in our everyday lives that help us to change and cope and understand the whole world around us. It lets us explore other possiblitites, explore other cultures. You can learn how a quote from a harry potter movie can relate to hester prynne in the scarlet letter. "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

good luck

Well, when I was in high school (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), English class was where you learned how to express yourself -- in complete sentences where subjects and verbs agreed, where spelling and punctuation were correct. We read and compared literature and drama.
I was able to parlay what I learned in high school English into a very interesting and fairly lucrative career in journalism (even though I never studied journalism in high school or university).
And my ability to write (and effectively BS) (thanks to high school English) got me through a lot of papers and exams in university.
Don't knock English. It can be a real ticket to an interesting career!

If you knew the answer to this question, you would've asked "What is the point of high school English classes?" Keep going and you'll figure it out for yourself.
