it started with a little cup of tea to keep myself awake.
then I was up to 5 cups of tea a day.
Now I'm on to harder stuff, 3 cups of coffee a day plus the tea. I don't like it because if I try to stop I start to get headaches and start getting uncontrollably sleepy. I don't like relying on caffeine to stay awake, don't think it's healthy, I'd like to stop but it's so difficult... !

Well, this may seem like a little problem, but it can be kind of serious. I had to quit my excessive coffee-in-the-morning routine quickly when I started having heart palpitations. There are two ways I might try going about this:

1. Quit cold turkey on a weekend. If you're having trouble getting through the day, or the caffeine withdrawl is giving you headaches, lie down, take a nap. If you need sleep, do what you can to get it. It's healthy for your body to get the rest you need. Use the weekend to get your body rested and relaxed, and drink something like a non-caffeinated herbal tea in the morning to start your day.

2. Just switch to decaffeinated coffee. Decaf has about 1/3 of the caffeine of regular coffee. The small amount of caffeine should be enough to keep you from getting withdrawl headaches, and you can still have your morning coffee routine.

Either way, a little caffeine is NOT bad for you; and the antioxidants in coffee and tea are a small bonus healthwise. It's just in excess that it is a bad thing.

That doesn't seem like a serious addiction to me. And just about anyone can get headaches from suddenly cutting out caffeine... doesn't really mean the amount you were consuming was huge.

Just cut back slowly... go down by only one cup less for the day, every few days. When you finally get down to just a coffee in the morning, and a coffee or tea in the afternoon... continue to enjoy them rather than cut them out. They'll probably be doing you more good than harm.

As crappy as it is to say, your just gonna have to deal with the headaches. You are gonna have them no matter what. What I found to help some (outside of taking asprin) drink lots and lots of water. Granted the first 2 or 3 days you will be peeing constantly, but trust me it helps. I was an straight up black coffee addict. The water kept me awake and made me overall feel better. If you don't like just plain water they have those new little packets of flavoring you can get to put in your water. Good Luck!

Okay, I drink a 20 ounce of Dr. Pepper every day and then I decided to give it up for lent. Well, I had a headache for the first week and it was hard, because I totally love DP, but it got better and will eventually go away. If you don't want to give it up completely, after I was finished with lent I lowered myself down to just a can of soda every day. I felt fine. Good Luck! Its hard, but it can be done.

Weening yourself is the best.. start by doing 1/2 decaf and 1/2 regular.. then starting adding more decalf.. most people can switch to the decalf stuff 100% and it kinda fools your body into thinking its the regular stuff because it tastes the same..

Good luck..
