Maybe you are scaring him by moving too suddenly, but when you actually make contact with him he calms down. Where did you get him? Was he abused previously? Perhaps if you socialize him more with other people and animals he we learn to calm down a bit.

Certain breeds of dogs are very anxious or skittish. It depends on the breed or mix breed of dog that you have. Also depends on if your dog had a previous owner that possibly abused him. Your dog must feel comforted when you pet him. It makes him feel loved. It is hard to understand animals and it is much a guessing games and takes time to learn about them. Good Luck!

if you want to make friends with your dog. Just be nice and move slowly around it for awhile. Show the dog that it can trust you and it will love and protect you from everyone. I would also spoil it with treats and let the dog get to know you.

Shelby is wrong.
Um lets see here...... ah yes. I had a dog in my 'dog training class' and he was as you described. He is a very anxious and you need to take him to more off leash parks, spend a lot of time and just reasure him that it is ok

If you got him from a shelter, it may be from past experiences in his life. If you didn't get him from a shelter, I have no clue.
