Well, according to the USDA and Dept. of Ag. neither exist. There are only commercial breeders, and show/hobby breeders. Period. There are good and bad in both. Many show/hobby breeders are FAMILY breeders. They often have only a couple dogs, raised in their home. These are the most desirable breeders to purchase a dog from. But, like I said there are good and bad breeders in every aspect. Period.

Back yard breeder is the generic term referring to those that are typically in it for the money. They're not educated on breeding what so ever. They don't properly select sires and dams to breed to maintain the standard. They don't care about flaws in the dogs they breed, including tempermant.

Now I do think there are some backyard breeders that are good. They have a few dogs, care about and love the breed and are breeding to improve the breed and offer litters suitable as pets, show and performance (i.e. agility and obedience). They take the extra steps to ensure the health of the parents and the litters they produce. I'm not scared of the person with a smaller type breeding facility, such as the "backyard" or "home raised" but I would take the steps to make sure they are reputable and putting the care needed to produce a good litter.

Puppy Mills make me ill, period. I am apauled by the conditions these dogs live in and the often outcome of these puppies lives. It's so very sad. They only want to breed for profit and caring well for the dogs they are breeding and the litters they produce simply doesn't happen.

A puppy mill is when a person(or people) have several different breeds of dogs(it can also be a lot of just one or two breeds) and they just breed and breed any time the dogs come in to heat. The dogs are usually very unsocialized, inbred and have many health problems. They also usually live in horrible conditions. A lot of the dogs that you buy in pet stores come from puppy mills.

A backyard breeder is someone who owns purebred animals and will breed them just because they are purebred. They don't do any health testing on the animals or look at the family history(not sure if that is the right term) of the dog. Not neccesarily the same as a puppy mill because a lot of times, the dog is a beloved member of the family and the owner just doesn't know any better.

Those are my definitions anyway. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

A puppy mill is where they keep numerous breeding bitches, usually in filthy and cramped conditions. These bitches are forced to have puppies at every season, then being thrown out when they get too old to have any more. The dogs are not socialised or exercised, and usually have no veterinary treatment.

A back yard breeder generally works on a smaller scale, but will produce puppies with little thought for their soundness or temperament, just with their minds on the money.

Pups from either of these sources are likely to have multiple health and mental problems. They will likely be full of worms and fleas, and will often die in the first few weeks in their new home. Those that do survive may have long-term health problems and require a lot of work to overcome their mental problems.

In order to avoid buying from either of these sources, you should always see the puppies with their mother, and in the pen where they actually live. Never buy from a breeder who is not prepared to show you the living conditions of their dogs. A good breeder will have all the information you need about the worming, vaccination and feeding of your puppy, and will be able to offer support and advice if it is needed later on.

Back yard breeding is an avoidable oops. If you are not planning to breed your dog, always spay or neuter and that will avoid this problem. Spaying and neutering will also help reduce your dog's risk of some cancers, too.

Puppy mill breeding is intentional. Please try to do your research whenever you get a puppy and do not help to further this problem by buying a puppy from such a breeder / pet store.

I also agree that these 2 are major contributors to discarded dogs that wind up in shelters. Also irresponsible breeding can lead to many avoidable health issues for the puppies. Don't be a accidental backyard breeder. Spay and Neuter.

A puppy mill is people who have many breeds of dogs for he purpose of breeding lots of litters and selling them wither through a broker or newspapers ads or what ever. They often do not take good care fo the dogs nad they are not activly showing them or trying to better the breed the are selling pup for profit.
A back yard breeder is not showing theor dogs and often have not had the correct genetic testing done on their breeding stock. They usually do not have as many breeds as the puppy miller does but may have more than one. They are also breeding not to better the breed they are breeding for profit.
Most are only pet quality dogs that have never seen a show ring and if they did would do very poorly at it as most are not very conformationally correct and many are not clode to the breed standards at all.

BYB= People breeding unproven and substandard purebreds.
Just because a dog is purebred it does not mean it is a good example of the breed and should be breed. Most are in it for the money.
Puppy mill ... the worst of the worst!! Sick and abused animals living in cages in their own excrement pumping out litter after litter for your local pet store till they can't anymore or their puppies start being still born from infections and diseases. Then the dog is use less and is put down or auctioned to the highest bidder to go to god only knows where for what purpose after that. Usually Universities for experiments or Corporations for product testing.

Then there is the Puppy Mill distributor known as the Hunte Corp.
who distributes these puppies of very low quality and with many many genetic faults and medical issues across the nation to your larger pet stores that still insist on selling them to gullible people that are willing to pay a small fortune for a animal just because it has papers.
I think I covered most of it for those who don't know.

Puppy mill = BAD Backyard Breeders could be good or bad. How to best explain...? puppy mills exist to make money, no other reason & often their puppies have health problems and/or are mistreated before you get them. Backyard breeders are non professional breeders who could be good or bad. If they check you out to make sure you'll be a good owner for the puppy, they're probably the best to go with because it shows they actually care about the dogs.

Backyard Breeder:

Another attempt to define various kinds of breeders results in the term backyard breeder. This term is used to describe people who breed dogs without knowing what they are doing. The motive may be profit, and occasionally someone of this sort will make a tidy profit from turning out puppies without spending the money to provide them with good care.

Puppy Mill:
Wherever dogs are produced for profit, the animals are at risk.

It is a case of potato/potatoe. I think ANYONE breeding dogs specifically to make money is bad. I think anyone who breeds dogs with out all health clearances is bad. I think anyone who breeds dogs without a thought to the breeds standard is bad. I think anyone who brees so many dogs that they do not know where they all are is bad. I guess if you can do all that as a commercial breeder, fine. If you do this as a show/hobby/backyard breeder...fine.
The basic defination of both a puppy mill and backyard breeder is a breeder who breeds for reasons other than bettering a breed.
