There's a lot of variables in that question, like how old are the kids, what type of gas mileage do you get, what route are you taking. But I'll try and give you some hints. First, Do a map quest for your route to figure the mileage. Then divide the miles of the trip by what you get for miles on a tank of gas for your car. That will give you how many times you will be filling up. Most people who travel cross county drive about 500 miles a day. You can also divide the miles by the distance your gonna drive to come up with the hours it's gonna take.
Some advice for the trip would be to only stop at places that are well lighted and have a lot of people around like truck stops. For security reasons, I would suggest hotels over motels. And if you have the time, take in the sites. There's a lot to do and see along the way.

My two children and I drove from Oklahoma to Florida last April. I think that's about 30% of the drive you're looking at. I spent about $175.00 in gas, I filled up 3 times on the way there , and about $150.00 dollars in food. My advice to you is to get a portable DVD player for the kids and books on tape for you. Video games wouldn't hurt either to keep them entertained. The worst experience happened when halfway through the trip I needed some sleep and every hotel between Louisiana and Florida are booked. ALL OF THEM. I slept with two kids in a parking lot. So make reservations. Another thing is to drink lots of water. I know you'll want to stop and pee more but it's easy to get dehydrated. It happened to me. And last of all, be careful of where you're eating. Your 2 kids wont stand a chance if their mom has food poisoning.

Get a citizen's band radio for yourself, and a TV/CD player for the kids. Map out your route before you start. An enlarged print out for each day's expected travel in an easy to reach place is very handy. Always have blankets and a first aid kit. And
stock up on snack foods and water, have your car checked out and serviced before you leave.
Check your insurance policy and make sure that you have road hazard coverage.
Schedule check-ins at regular intervals with a family member or close friend.
Enjoy the scenery and keep a cool head.
Have a safe trip.

Take alot of games for the kids to play. Bring snacks and some sleep stuff, so they feel comfortable in the car. Map out your trip, please don't take roads you are not sure of. Or that are not on the map. Have phone numbers of friends and family through out the states, in case of emergencies. Bring enough cash in case of problems with the A.T.M.'s, or with your card. Follow the laws of each state, you don't want to be fined or jailed for something, in a state you don't know. Be safe and cautious on the road. Lock doors at night, and don't ask certain strangers for help. Only workers who are at a popular gas station, or at stores. The police are okay too. It could be alot of fun and hard work, just plan well.

why would u drive all that way!!! try to find one of those amtraks that you can put your car on so u get some sort of a break. if your going to go all that way, take your time. plan out things to see and do along the way with the kids. landmark places you can spend like 2 hours or so. It will give you a break from driving and wear the kids out a little. i think your nuts and should try to find another way to do it. or get a friend to go with u at least!!

I say probably looking at close to a week of travel. Lots of fillups, looking at least a hundred dollars for gas at today's prices.
Bring plenty of travel games and snacks. Make several stops for breaks and always spend the night in a motel not in your car in some highway lot. Be safe and DO NOT pick up hitchhikers. Stay in well lit areas.
