The verse you quoted (Matthew 5:44) is by the most difficult one for anyone to follow regardless of who they are. In full it says:
“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;”
It is in our nature to retaliate against those who seek to do us harm. This country’s posture on its War on Terror exemplifies this vengeful mentality. For all our talk of Christian virtue, we in this country violate Christian principles every day when we enact policies that cause the death of thousands around the world just because of the wanton hate of a few among their midst.
The statement made by Jesus in Matthew 5:44 embodies the central theme of the Christian message. By the majority of Americans and the world ignoring this injunction, we are acting in a way that is contrary to the way Christ would want us to live.
It does not matter how many Churches we erect; it doesn’t matter the number of crosses we sling around our necks; it doesn’t matter how many bumper stickers we put on our cars citing Biblical passages; our refusal to follow Matthew 5:44 demonstrates the painful fact that we are not Christian in the true sense of the word.

I would agree with you, most people have trouble with "love thine enemy."
But I would go further, and say that EVERYONE has trouble with that, even when they succeed to one degree or another.
I'm not excusing. I AM saying I believe Christians, in their hearts, don't want to be Christian. It's too demanding.
