We recently adopted a 7 month old calico cat and just noticed a couple of days ago that she seems to have a second set of smaller claws on her front feet. They are very small and appear to be coming out of her paw pads. I have had several cats and have never seen this before. It does not seem to bother her at all. It's just something I've never seen before and was wondering if anyone else has seen this.

I forgot to add a detail. The extra set of claws are coming out of her regular pads.

This almost sounds like a deformity that humans can have where they have an extra finger on each hand and an extra toe on each foot [If you have seen the traveling Body World exhibit then you may have seen this]. I have never seen this or heard of it before, but cats are rather prone to mutation due to similar gene structures in most breeds. [This also applies to turtles, frogs, cows, and several other animal species.] I have, however, have heard of cats with extra toes, two sets of ears, or two faces controlled by one brain. If you are worried, then mention this to your vet next time you take your cat in for a check up. If nothing is wrong, then you probablyshoud be able to leave the extra claws on. >^-^<

I had a cat years ago that had those as well, it has been awhile and I can't remember what they are called, they never seemed to bother her at all. She lived until she was 21. Good luck with your new kitty.
PS-don't really know if this makes a difference, but she was calico on one side of her face and tabby on the other, weird but cute.

Don't worry, it is very common in cats. I have two cats that have extra six toes on their front paws. Some cats have them on all four paws. You know that some people are also born that way ( feet and hands). Usually the extra toe or finger will be surgical removed. In fact cats with extra toes are very loveable cats. They often call them mittens.

Its more common that would you would probably think. My cat had seven toes on each paw. We had to have some removed because they tend to become ingrown and infected. Just make sure you keep her claws well trimmed to prevent this. We trimmed them, and still ended up at the vets office. Actually our new puppy has extra toes too, same problem we have to have them removed because he gets them caught on things and it hurts him.

That's kind of weird. I know that some cats have six toes on their feet, but I've never heard of anything like that.

Those are normal...they're called "horned paws."
My cat has them too, only on the back feet.
Ancient lore says cats with "horned paws" are considered lucky.
